St. Johns River played a significant role in the development of the city. It is one of the few rivers in the US that flows north. The river served as a water highway for travelers, explorers, and navigators. Some of them developed farms, plantations, and businesses around the area. Villages began to spring up and the steamboat industry boomed. These developments spurred the development of Debary and the state of Florida.
